6000 Lake Sturgeon arriving!
Greetings!
I am excited to inform you about the coming home of 6,000 lake sturgeon.
These feisty fish will be leaving Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery
on October 23rd to arrive in the early afternoon at Northeast Michigan's
Cheboygan County. This exclusive, one-of-a-kind project is the outcome
of the cooperative efforts of Sturgeon For Tomorrow, the Michigan
Department of Natural Resources and Michigan State University.
The Headstart Program is the first in the world to collect larval
lake sturgeon, transfer to a hatchery for nurturing and return to
their natal streams. The reintroduction of these young-of-the-year
lake sturgeon in an ongoing effort to rehabilitate the lake sturgeon
populations of Black, Burt and Mullett Lake.
The bottom dwelling lake sturgeon is a living fossil. This ancient
species made its first appearance about 136 million years ago, just
about the time dinosaurs made their abrupt exit from earth's ever
changing stage. It's also a rare fish. Sturgeon can live be over
100 years old and weigh over 200 pounds. Female sturgeon first spawn
between ages 17 and 30, once mature they spawn every 4 to 7 years.
Male sturgeon do not spawn until they are 12 to 20 years old, then
spawn every 2 to 4 years. Lake sturgeon in Michigan are a threatened
species and a rare species throughout the United States.
We will meet the DNR tanker truck on Thursday October 23 @ 1:00pm
in Indian River at Burger King parking lot.
We will then go to Fisher Woods Road to the Sturgeon River ( about
a mile south of M-68 West and M-27).
We will then go to Pigeon Bay/Coxie Bridge on East Mullett Lake
Road, this is at the mouth of the Pigeon River.
From there we will go the Red Bridge on the Upper Black River.
If you would like more information or need defined directions, please
contact me.
Respectfully,
Brenda Archambo, President

INLAND LAKE FISHING RIGHTS UPDATE
The issue
regarding the tribal fishing, hunting and gathering rights in Northern
Michigan is now going to be decided by the Federal Courts. As the
members were advised a year or so ago, the tribes want to be able
to commercially fish inland lakes in our area. For detailed information
on this subject, please click on: http://www.mucc.org/TribalDispute.htm
